Additional Gr.10 Course Electives for 2018/2019

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As described in a previous email, Howe Sound Secondary School counsellors visited Don Ross Middle School this morning in order to present to all Grade 9 students. Their presentation outlined course electives available to students outside of regular school hours (either before or after school depending on the course).

Please click here to access an online form which will allow your child to request an outside the timetable course. This link will remain active until 4:00 pm on May 9th. In order to assist with this selection process, the presentation that our HSS counsellors delivered can be viewed below. Please note that, depending on the course, you may receive an email with supplemental registration steps.

Please feel free to contact me via return email or by phone at 604 892-5261 ext. 105 if you have any questions regarding the information outlined above.

Ministry Numeracy Assessment

Dear Parents and Guardians of Grade 10/11 students,

Please note we are in the process of registering students who are preparing to take the June Numeracy Assessment and require one week to collect the names of those students who will be writing.

The Numeracy Assessment:

  • is required for all students graduating after June 30th, 2018 (all current Grade 10 and 11 students will need to write it before graduation)
  • is an assessment of skills learned from Grades 1-9 and is NOT attached to the content of a particular course
  • can be attempted up to 3 times and the best mark will be the only one shown on a student transcript
  • can be written in January and June of each school year

I have attached a document that explains this assessment further, as well as the following link which includes a sample exam: (https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/provincial-assessment/graduation/numeracy).

Any of our Grade 10 or 11 students who wish to write the Numeracy Assessment in June will need to register at our school office no later than Friday, May 11th to confirm their participation. After May 11th, we will be unable to register any students for the June write.

Additional information regarding dates and times, as well as practice sessions, will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.

Please also note that a number of our Grade 11 students wrote the Numeracy Assessment as part of a pilot project in January of this year. These students can access their results by going to http://www.studenttranscripts.gov.bc.ca/. Here they will be prompted to either sign in, or register for a BCeID account. As well, students will require their PEN number to log onto their results which can be found on your student’s report card.

If you have any questions, please contact our school at 604 892-5261 and one of our administrative staff will able to assist you.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It has been a very busy and productive week at Howe Sound Secondary.  First semester classes are settling nicely and student learning is focused and purposeful.

Please note the following reminders/updates regarding next week:

1)      We are hosting an information session for parents of students new to our school on Tuesday, September 12th at 6:30 pm in our Eagle Eye Theatre.  Parents of Grade 10 students as well as parents of any new Grade 11 or 12 students are invited to hear from school administration and counselling staff about what to expect from the coming year at HSS.  This is an informative presentation with time devoted to answering any questions parents may have.

2)      Following this meeting our school will be hosting the Annual General Meeting of our Parent Advisory Council (PAC) at 7:00 pm.  This meeting will be held in our school library and all parents are invited to attend.  At this meeting we will be electing our PAC Executive, and parents will be provided with updates on a number of topics including:

  • Student Enrolment Update
  • Academic Programs Update
  • Extra-Curricular Opportunities
  • Upcoming School Events

3)    Student Photo Day is scheduled for Friday, September 15th.  Each student in our school will have his/her photo taken on this day for our school yearbook as well as their student ID card.  More information will be forthcoming early next week regarding Student Photo Day.

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the information outlined above.  I can be reached via return email or at 604 892-5261 ext. 105.
